Statewide Insurance Company, in partnership with Bank of Africa, has donated 300 bags of cement to Alliance Secondary School in Nansana to support the reconstruction of a boys’ dormitory that was destroyed by fire last year, underscoring the role of private sector support and insurance in safeguarding educational institutions against unforeseen disasters.

The donation follows a devastating fire that gutted the boys’ dormitory at Alliance Secondary School towards the end of the third term in 2025, leaving students displaced and causing significant damage to school property.

The blaze, which occurred at the close of the academic year, razed the dormitory structure and destroyed students’ belongings, sending shockwaves through the school community and highlighting the vulnerability of learning institutions to unexpected emergencies.

In response, officials from Statewide Insurance Company and Bank of Africa recently visited the school to hand over the cement, a contribution expected to play a key role in accelerating reconstruction works.

Jagwe Ronald Muyingo, the Head of Corporate Affairs at Statewide Insurance, said the company felt compelled to support the school, noting that Alliance Secondary School is one of its clients.

“It was imperative for us to lend a hand to Alliance Secondary School,” Muyingo said.

“This institution is a client of Statewide Insurance, and we felt a strong obligation to assist, especially considering that the damaged dormitory was not initially covered under their insurance policy.”

Muyingo used the occasion to emphasize the importance of insurance for both individuals and institutions, saying property owners have a responsibility to protect their assets against potential losses.

“It is the duty of every person to embrace the practice of insurance to safeguard their properties,” he said.

The founder of Alliance Secondary School, Turyakira Jastus, expressed appreciation to Statewide Insurance and Bank of Africa for what he described as timely and critical support.

“We are immensely thankful to Statewide Insurance and Bank of Africa for their generous contribution,” Turyakira said.

“This support is invaluable in helping us restore essential facilities for our students.”

He also urged fellow school proprietors to prioritize insurance coverage, noting that it can provide vital relief in times of crisis such as fires and other unforeseen losses.

Muyingo further called on government to ensure that all public schools are adequately insured, while appealing to private school owners to register their institutions for insurance cover, especially as schools reopen for the new term.

Daudi Mugabi, the Head of Digital Solutions at Statewide Insurance, raised concern over what he described as a widespread reluctance among Ugandans to insure their property, even when they have the financial capacity to do so.

“It is regrettable that many Ugandans, even when they have the means, hesitate to insure their valuable possessions,” Mugabi said, warning that this exposes individuals and institutions to severe financial risks when disasters strike.

Reconstruction works at the school are already underway, with the donated cement expected to significantly boost progress.

School administrators say they are optimistic that the dormitory will be completed in time for full reopening later this month.

The intervention by Statewide Insurance and Bank of Africa has been cited as an example of how private sector partnerships can strengthen resilience in the education sector, while also reigniting debate on the importance of insurance as a safety net for schools across the country.
